FAQ

Why does proper layering matter?
A technical layering system manages moisture first, adds adjustable warmth second, and lets your outer shell handle wind and snow. Staying dry is critical because damp layers rapidly reduce warmth and comfort.

Why should I never wear cotton as a base or mid layer?
Cotton absorbs sweat, holds moisture and dries slowly. Once wet, it pulls heat away from the body and can leave you cold. For active winter use, choose moisture-wicking synthetics or merino wool instead.

Layer Type Guide

A good winter layering system manages moisture, adds warmth and lets you adapt as conditions change. Use this guide to understand the role of each layer and how the pieces work together.

Base Layer

A base layer is worn directly against the skin. Its main job is to move moisture away from the body so you stay dry and comfortable while riding or spending time outside. Base layers are typically close-fitting and made from quick-drying synthetic fabrics, merino wool or a blend. This category includes thermal tops, bottoms and one-piece suits.

Mid Layer

A mid layer is worn over the base layer and beneath the outer shell. Its job is to trap warmth while continuing to release moisture. Technical fleece, grid fleece, riding hoodies and lightly insulated pullovers commonly serve as mid layers. The right mid layer depends on the temperature, your activity level and the warmth of your outer jacket.

Insulator

An insulator is a warmth-focused layer that uses synthetic fill, down or another high-loft construction to hold warm air around the body. It can be worn beneath a waterproof shell on colder riding days, adding warmth without replacing the shell’s weather protection.

Insulators are also highly versatile away from the mountain. Many riders wear pieces such as Burton [ak] insulators as their everyday winter jacket, then use the same piece under a snow jacket on colder mountain days. In dry conditions, an insulator can work perfectly well on its own. In wind, wet snow or storm conditions, pair it with a protective outer shell.

How the Layers Work Together

  • Base Layer: manages moisture next to the skin.
  • Mid Layer: adds breathable, adaptable warmth.
  • Insulator: provides higher warmth for cold conditions and can double as an everyday winter jacket.
  • Outer Shell: adds wind and weather protection when conditions require it.

You may not need every layer on every day. Adjust your system based on temperature, weather and activity level.
