Changing your fins is the fastest way to change how your board feels on the water. While most boards come with a stock setup, professional riders often swap fins to match the daily wave conditions or to push their progression in a specific style.
Surf Style Fins (The Thruster & Quad)
For surf-style boards from Ronix and Hyperlite, the fins are usually larger and deeper.
- Large Fins: Provide more "drive" and stability. They help you generate speed when pumping and keep the board from sliding out during deep carves.
- Smaller Fins: If you find your board is too "locked in" and hard to turn, dropping down to a smaller fin set will allow the tail to break free more easily.
Skim Style Fins (The Skim Nub)
Phase 5 boards and other skim-style decks usually feature a single, very shallow fin.
The "Nub": These fins (often 1" or 2" deep) are designed to provide just enough tracking to keep the board straight while you're on the wave, but are shallow enough to allow for effortless spins and shuv-its.
