Find your starting size, understand boot fit, and choose with confidence. This guide covers alpine ski boots for adults and juniors. Always check the individual product’s fit volume, flex and sole standard before ordering.

1. Measure both feet

You’ll need paper, a pencil, a ruler and a hard, level floor.

  1. Place the paper against a wall and stand on it barefoot, with your heel lightly touching the wall.
  2. Keep your weight on your foot and mark the end of your longest toe.
  3. Measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres. Repeat on your other foot.
  4. Record both measurements and use the longer foot as your starting reference.

Also measure the widest part of your forefoot. Length helps identify size; width and foot shape help identify the right boot.

2. Understand Mondo sizing

Ski boots use Mondopoint, usually shown in centimetres. A foot measuring 26.5 cm corresponds to a Mondo reference of 26.5. This is a starting point for fitting, rather than a guarantee that every boot in that size will fit.

Measure your feet instead of relying on your everyday shoe size. US, UK and European conversions vary between manufacturers.

Between sizes? Ask for fit advice before rounding up. Many boots share a shell across two neighbouring sizes, such as 26/26.5. Shell groupings and liner or size-adjuster arrangements depend on the model. Not every listed size is available in every boot.

3. Match the boot to your foot shape

  • Low volume: A closer fit typically suited to narrower or lower-volume feet.
  • Medium volume: A balanced fit typically suited to average-volume feet.
  • High volume: More space, typically suited to wider or higher-volume feet.

Last width describes the boot’s forefoot width at a specified reference size. Compare the manufacturer’s stated size as well as the number. Instep height, heel shape and calf fit matter too. Adding length to solve a width problem can leave the heel loose.

4. Check the fit before skiing

Try boots indoors with one pair of thin ski socks. Fasten the buckles or BOA system with moderate tension, then flex forward several times.

  • Your toes may lightly touch the front while standing upright and should ease back when you flex forward.
  • Your heel should feel secure, with little lifting or sliding.
  • Expect close, even contact. Sharp pain, numbness or persistent toe pressure needs attention.

Liners settle with use, but don’t assume a painful fit will resolve itself. A boot fitter can assess the shell and advise on suitable adjustments.

5. Choose a suitable flex

A lower flex number generally means a softer boot; a higher number generally means a stiffer boot. The right choice depends on your ability, weight, strength, ankle mobility and skiing style. Flex numbers are not standardized across brands, so use them as a comparison point rather than a universal scale.

6. Check sole compatibility

Read the boot’s sole standard and your binding’s compatibility information before pairing them. Alpine, GripWalk and touring soles are not automatically interchangeable. Have your setup checked and adjusted by a qualified ski technician.

Junior boots

Measure children’s feet again before each season. Choose a junior model with suitable flex and confirm that its sole standard is accepted by the binding. Ask for fitting advice about growth allowance rather than buying substantially oversized boots.

Forgiving wide-fit boot with four-buckle control

Description

The Atomic Hawx Magna 90 is the perfect entry into the wide-fit Hawx Magna series, offering all-mountain performance with a soft 90 flex and a high-volume 102mm last. Prolite technology keeps the construction light to wrap the foot, while adding strategic reinforcements only in key zones to deliver power transfer to your skis. Energy Link adds responsiveness to your turn through a dynamic connection between shell and cuff. Four-buckle closure gives you the benefit of being able to independently vary the pressure distribution at each buckle location. The 3D Stretch Toe Box maximizes the liner’s available length when important millimeters are required to achieve the perfect fit. A removable Adaptive Fit System (AFS) Cuff offers additional space around the calf if needed. If you’re looking for a softer flex in a high-volume, wide fit ski boot, this could be the one for you.
