Sunglasses Size & Fit Guide

The best Oakley fit depends on three things: frame size, face coverage and bridge design. Oakley lists these separately because a wide-coverage frame is not necessarily the same physical size as another model labelled XL.

Use the guide below to understand Oakley measurements, compare them with sunglasses that already fit and identify whether High Bridge, Low Bridge, Universal or Adjustable Nosepad construction is best for you.

Understanding Oakley Frame Measurements

Oakley frame dimensions are measured in millimetres. You can often find them engraved inside the temple arm after the model code.

Measurement What It Means
Model Code The identifying model and colour code, often beginning with OO. It is not a size measurement.
Lens Width The horizontal width of one lens at its widest point. It is commonly the first measurement after the model code.
Bridge Width The distance between the lenses where the frame sits over the nose. It appears after lens width.
Temple Length The length of the frame arm from its hinge toward and around the ear. It is usually the third measurement.
Lens Height The vertical height of the lens. Oakley may list this separately to help indicate coverage.
Overall Frame Width The width across the entire lens front. Oakley product pages may show this beside a letter size, such as L (135 mm) or XL (138 mm).

Example: Reading the Numbers

55 ○ 17 133 means approximately 55 mm lens width, 17 mm bridge width and 133 mm temple length. Use these dimensions to compare a new Oakley frame with eyewear that already fits well.

Oakley Fit Guide: Narrow, Regular & Wide

Oakley uses fit as an aesthetic indication of how much face coverage the lens front provides for that specific frame size. Fit categories should not replace the product’s millimetre measurements.

Narrow Fit

A smaller lens front intended for someone with a slightly narrow head. Look for even temple contact without excessive gaps at the sides.

Regular Fit

A lens front intended for an average-sized head. This describes coverage and does not mean that every Regular frame has identical dimensions.

Wide Fit

A larger lens front intended for a wide head. It should provide coverage without the temples bowing outward or pressing sharply at the sides.

Oakley Frame Size Labels

Oakley may show letter sizes such as S, M, L, XL or a universal U size beside an overall width in millimetres. The millimetre value is the most useful comparison because letter sizing is model-specific.

Label How to Use It
S / M / L / XL Relative size options for a particular model. Compare the accompanying frame-width measurement rather than assuming an L in one model equals an L in another.
XS or XL in Model Name Usually indicates a smaller or larger variation of that frame family. Check every listed dimension because the change can involve lens coverage and frame geometry.
U / One Size Only one frame size is offered for that style. It does not guarantee a correct fit for every wearer; still check its fit category, bridge type and dimensions.
Shield Frames Single-lens sport frames may not compare neatly using conventional one-lens width. Prioritize overall frame width, bridge/nosepad type and product-specific fit information.

Oakley Bridge & Nosepad Fit Guide

Bridge fit controls where the frame rests on the nose and how it clears the cheekbones. It is separate from Narrow, Regular or Wide face coverage.

High Bridge Fit

Designed for a higher nose bridge and lower cheekbones. Oakley suggests this when the nose bridge sits above the level of the pupils.

Low Bridge Fit

Designed for a lower nose bridge and higher cheekbones. Consider it if frames slide down, sit too low or contact the cheeks.

Universal Fit

A versatile bridge and nosepad construction intended to accommodate many face shapes. Confirm stability and cheek clearance in the final fit check.

Adjustable Nosepads

Nosepads that can be widened or narrowed for an individualized fit. Adjust both sides evenly and follow the product instructions.

How to Determine Your Best Oakley Fit

Step What to Do What You Are Looking For
1 Start With a Pair That Fits Read the dimensions inside its temple arm or measure its overall width, lens width, bridge and temple. Use these as your most reliable starting reference.
2 Choose Face Coverage Select Narrow, Regular or Wide according to head width and desired coverage, then compare the exact millimetre dimensions.
3 Choose the Bridge Use High Bridge, Low Bridge, Universal or Adjustable Nosepads based on where your nose sits, cheekbone clearance and past sliding issues.
4 Check Temple Pressure The temples should make secure, even contact without pinching, bowing dramatically outward or leaving a large side gap.
5 Check Nose & Cheeks The frame should remain at a comfortable height without sliding. Lenses and lower rims should not rest on the cheeks during normal facial movement.
6 Test Movement & Vision Look down, turn your head and make activity-specific movements. The frame should stay stable, the temples should sit correctly and your sightline should remain centred in the lens area.

Signs You May Need a Different Fit

Frame Feels Too Narrow

Strong pressure at the temples, arms bowing outward, hinges under tension or the frame sitting unusually high can indicate insufficient width.

Frame Feels Too Wide

Large side gaps, frequent movement, temples that do not engage securely or a frame that slips during gentle motion can indicate excessive width.

Bridge Is Not Right

Sliding down, sitting too low, pinching the nose or contacting the cheeks may indicate a different bridge type or nosepad setup is needed.

How to Measure Sunglasses

Overall Frame Width: Lay the sunglasses open on a flat surface. Measure straight across the widest part of the lens front from one outer edge to the other.

Lens Width: Measure one lens horizontally at its widest point, excluding the surrounding frame.

Bridge Width: Measure the shortest horizontal distance between the two lenses. The physical nose fit can still differ because bridge shape and nosepads also matter.

Lens Height: Measure one lens vertically at its tallest point, excluding the surrounding frame.

Temple Length: Measure from the hinge along the arm to its tip, following any bend. Compare with the manufacturer’s stated dimension whenever possible.

Sizing is a guide only. Frame geometry, wrap, lens shape, bridge design, nosepads and temple construction all affect fit. Measurements and product-specific fit information on the individual Oakley product page take priority.
